Text messages using Hangouts on Nexus phones

You can send and receive text messages (SMS), as well as photos and videos (MMS), using the Hangouts app on your Nexus phone:
  • Nexus 4: Your  Messaging app will continue to be the default text message app unless you turn on SMS in Hangouts or change your default SMS app to Hangouts in  Settings > Wireless & networks > More > Default SMS app. Once you turn on SMS in Hangouts, you can read messages in the Messaging app but can’t reply.
  • Nexus 5: The Hangouts app is the only pre-installed SMS/MMS app on your device.
  • Nexus phones running Android 4.0 to Android 4.3: If you turn on SMS in Hangouts, your current Messaging app won’t notify you of received messages unless you turn SMS off in the Hangouts app.

The video below shows you how to send and receive text messages using the Hangouts app. Learn more about sending text messages using Hangoutsmerging your Hangouts and text messages, and managing SMS settings.
